Album Review: Send A Prayer My Way by Julien Baker & TORRES

Great, Based on 6 Critics

Think of it like the Indigo Girls go west: two queer indie singer-songwriters who form a creative partnership and return to their roots. TORRES and Baker, born in Georgia and Tennessee respectively, reconnect with the music of their youth and expand their horizons anew on Send a Prayer My Way. Listening to the gentle twang of their intermingling voices and plucky instrumentals, you'd never know it was their first foray into country.

Confidently playing to the strengths of its creators, this collaborative work is built on undeniable chemistry Almost 10 years ago, long-time friends Julien Baker and Mackenzie Scott (otherwise known as Torres) made a promise to each other to collaborate on a country music album. Both women were raised as Southern Baptist in the country heartland of Tennessee and bonded over a love of the genre’s big names. Then, both Scott and Baker’s solo careers flourished, and the Grammy-winning success of Baker’s Boygenius supergroup appeared to have scuppered the country album for a while.

Whether it be Beyoncé, Post Malone, Lana Del Rey or even Ringo Starr, it's become such a common occurrence now that the announcement of venturing into aforesaid territory can often be met with a sly roll of the eyes. Sometimes it whiffs of a lazy cash-in - especially in the U.S. where country is arguably more popular and in vogue than ever - but in other cases, the change in direction is earnt, and it works incredibly well.

Yeehaw "The new Lucy Dacus album is just fine. Where does Sapphic folk go from here?" This was the headline that Hannah Jocelyn wrote for Xtra Magazine regarding Dacus' recent Forever is a Feeling and, while a bit provocative and unfair to levy at Lucy (or anyone in particular), it's a fair question to ask. I, a heterosexual dude, am wholly unqualified to speak to the sapphic qualities of the question, but it's hard to deny that Phoebe Bridgers' breakthrough, Punisher, has ushered in a gold rush of yearning that has begun to yield diminishing returns as of late.

Opinion: Fantastic

Both raised Southern Baptist, Julien Baker and Mackenzie Scott (a.k.a. Torres) have taken similar paths, breaking free of the conservative environs of their childhoods and becoming singer-songwriters acclaimed for their brawny guitar riffs and queer self-expression. But, it turns out, you just can't take the South out of the coastal indie darlings. On Send a Prayer My Way, their first album as a duo, Baker and Scott reclaim the honky-tonk music they grew up on.

DIY Magazine
Opinion: Excellent

A record that's ostensibly been on the horizon since Julien Baker and TORRES (aka Mackenzie Scott) first played together way back in 2016, 'Send A Prayer My Way' is in many ways a meeting of minds, a deeply evocative project emblematic of courage and queer community. It's undeniable that country music is currently enjoying a moment in the sun - just look at Beyoncé and Chappell Roan's recent output - but, much like their pop contemporaries, Julien and Mackenzie here offer much more than mere trend bandwagoning. Setting the tone for what follows - namely, a masterclass in devastating vulnerability - opener 'Dirt' is a raw admission of toxic habits and self-sabotage; when, half way through, Mackenzie's lower register offers a response to Julien's plaintive call, their melancholic harmony is nigh on heart-breaking.
