Album Review: Y2K by Ice Spice

Mediocre, Based on 6 Critics

The Line of Best Fit - 60
Based on rating 6/10

After her mostly-successful EP Like…?, she released a string of singles that (for better or for worse) highlighted the fact that she's in creative control. The excellent "Deli" featured the bizarre and indicative line, "I'm the shit, I'm that bitch, I'm Miss Poopie," followed by her lead single for her debut album, "Think U The Shit (Fart)," and the hyper "Gimme A Light," where she declares, "I'm Miss Poopie like I need a diaper. " Thankfully, she keeps up the storyline on "BB Belt," where she assures, "I'm Miss Poopie but I never smell.

It's an apt title for Ice Spice's debut album, which has similarly gone from milestone moment to letdown in the months that she's been hyping it. The rapper born Isis Gaston came out of nowhere in late 2022 with her viral single "Munch (Feelin' U)" and absolutely ruled 2023: she was on the star-studded Barbie soundtrack, had a No. 2 hit with a Taylor Swift collab, and teamed up with PinkPantheress for one of the year's best songs.

Please see very centre of the album art for a one word review Just in case social media hasn't clued you in a million times over already, Ice Spice is a rapper from NYC who rose to the forefront of public consciousness predominantly through popular social media platform/ brainrot fast-tracker, TikTok. Her rapping style is perhaps best described as Nicki Minaj after an aneurysm, but this doesn't matter too much because her social media presence is absolutely flawless, and her debut LP has, surprisingly, turned out to be something of musical revelation. There's a medical phenomenon known as hysterical blindness which, as the name suggests, can sometimes result in an instantaneous/ progressive loss of sight as a stress response to triggering or traumatic visual stimuli.

PopMatters - 10
Based on rating 1/10

The title of Ice Spice's 2023 mixtape Like…? captures her ability to say nothing sharply, the bedrock of her appeal. The single-word title implies a longer statement, while ellipses put the burden on the listener to imagine what Ice Spice might have to say but is too ambivalent to articulate. This brevity animates a cool yet unburdened persona, which supports lyrics that don't compare to the specificity of Nicki Minaj or the shock value of Cardi B.

Los Angeles Times
Opinion: Very Good

Two years after crashing into pop stardom with an all-timer of a kiss-off in "Munch (Feelin' U)," Ice Spice has finally delivered her debut album: the young Bronx rapper's long-awaited opportunity, we're meant to understand, to prove she's more than just a viral hitmaker. Eh, why bother? That's the nonchalant vibe -- and the not-inconsiderable appeal -- of "Y2K!," on which Ice Spice spends all of 23 minutes shrugging through 10 songs about sex, competition and the cold calculus of infidelity: "If he's cheating I'm doing him worse," she reasons. "I don't care 'cause he did it first.

Capricorns aren't renowned as the zodiacs party animals. It's right there in the symbolism: the sure and steady mountain goat. A sign split by New Year's Eve, there's something different about January Capricorns , though - it's as though the chains of responsibilities have loosened up a little. Born on the first day of January 2000, Bronx rapper Ice Spice is blessed with both worlds - she has the hustle of the Capricorn, but there's something more extroverted, too.
